Why I Keep My Goals to Myself
I used to share the goals I was working toward with people. Why wouldn’t you want to share something you’re excited about? You choose to open up, make yourself vulnerable, and share the vision you have for your future. You expect the response to be encouraging and supportive but instead, you leave the conversation deflated. Why? Because you just allowed someone else’s opinion to negatively affect the way you view and feel about your goals. Prior to the conversation, you were certain about what you wanted from life and now you’re not so sure about the direction you are headed.
Here are some reasons to consider keeping your goals private:
Avoiding external pressure: Sharing your goals with others can sometimes lead to added pressure and expectations. People might constantly inquire about your progress or offer unsolicited advice, which can create stress and make you feel accountable to others rather than yourself.
Protecting against judgment: Not everyone may understand or support your goals; sharing them with the wrong people could lead to criticism or negative feedback. This might discourage you from pursuing your aspirations.
Maintaining focus and motivation: Some find that keeping their goals private allows them to stay more focused and self-motivated. Without external distractions or opinions, they can concentrate on the task at hand and work towards achieving their objectives without outside influence.
Preserving the element of surprise: Keeping your goals secret until you achieve them can be a way to make any eventual success or achievement more fulfilling. It allows you to celebrate and bask in the accomplishment without prematurely announcing your intentions.
This is not to say that everyone will intentionally sabotage your journey. Often, the people you share with are projecting their limiting beliefs onto you but have the best intentions. But, if you’re sure about what you want and you stay determined and focused, you can achieve anything. So instead of prematurely sharing your aspirations with the world, consider protecting your energy and instead, silently slay it. But don’t forget to celebrate when you make it to the finish line!
